From Theatre to Cinema: The Roots of an Auteur Vision

Antonio Manco’s passion for cinema blossomed in Perugia when, at eighteen, he joined the CUT (University Theatre Centre). Under the enlightened guidance of Roberto Ruggieri, theatre became more than artistic training; it became a journey of inner discovery that deeply influenced his directorial approach.
The Ruggieri method—a skilled fusion of Stanislavski’s psychological work and Grotowski’s physical exploration—not only taught acting techniques but also opened unexplored paths toward emotional authenticity, body awareness, and expressive vocal power. For Antonio, this total immersion into the actor’s craft became an existential laboratory: experiencing vulnerability, resistance, and creative breakthroughs firsthand provided him with a visceral understanding of the acting process, which today distinguishes his approach to directing actors.
His pursuit of scenic truth led him to meditative practices, finding in theatre a pathway toward ego dissolution. This dual awareness—technical and spiritual—forms the foundation of his independent filmmaking, marked by an unusual intimacy with his actors.

The Image as Language: From Social Cinema to Directing
During his university years, Antonio founded “Prhomo Sapiens,” a cultural association that became a laboratory for intercultural experimentation. Here he took his first concrete steps toward visual language: a photography course with Stefano Accorsi introduced him to the grammar of still images, while a filmmaking workshop with Gabriele Anastasio opened the doors to narrative in motion.
The year 2001 marked a decisive turning point: he co-founded, alongside Luigi Marmo and Fabio Melelli, the “Bianco Film Festival,” Italy’s first festival dedicated to social cinema. Reviewing hundreds of films from around the world became an ongoing film education: each movie was a dialogue with diverse languages, distant poetics, and universal narrative urgencies. Year after year, his vocation crystallized: no longer just observing and selecting, but creating. The festival became a crucible where his passion for socially committed cinema transformed into personal expressive necessity.

Learning from the masters
- Ipotesi Cinema: Ermanno Olmi’s Poetic Vision
A crucial stage in Antonio’s training took place in Bologna at “Ipotesi Cinema,” the school directed by Ermanno Olmi. For two years, every weekend became an opportunity to learn directly from this master of Italian cinema. Here, Antonio absorbed the essence of observational cinema and the poetic gaze upon reality that would become a stylistic hallmark of his independent documentaries. - Cinema as a Journey: The Legacy of Fernando E. Solanas
During an intensive course in Perugia, Antonio, at just twenty-three, met Fernando “Pino” Solanas, a master of Latin American cinema. The Argentine director shared invaluable practical advice on independent filmmaking, imparting a vision of free and authentic cinema. Solanas taught how to turn economic constraints into creative opportunities, demonstrating that powerful visual and emotional works could be created with limited budgets—principles Antonio embraced fully, turning ingenuity and creativity into the true engines of film production. - The Alchemy of Dialogue: Screenwriting Lessons with Anna Pavignano
In 2008, at the University of Salerno, Antonio attended a creative writing course taught by Anna Pavignano, the historic screenwriter of Massimo Troisi. Meeting Pavignano marked a crucial moment: through her teachings, Antonio discovered the alchemy of words turning into images, the delicacy of cinematic dialogue, and the importance of writing stories born from the heart before the mind.

Sentieri Selvaggi: Ongoing Education
Antonio’s pursuit of excellence led him to numerous advanced courses at “Sentieri Selvaggi,” developing a comprehensive technical and theoretical toolkit:
- Film Production with Gianluca Arcopinto: Training as an executive producer, economic management, production planning, and financing strategies from pre-production to distribution.
- Documentary Production with Raffaele Brunetti (BBFilm): Professional management of film and TV projects.
- TV Series Writing with Angelo Pastore: Serial narrative structure and character development for streaming platforms.
- Screenwriting with Enrico Saccà and Cristiano Ciccotti: Deep dive into American narrative models.
- Artificial Intelligence for Screenwriting with Andrea Traina: Innovative workflows for idea generation and plot development.
- AI for Post-production with Giorgio Caridi: Optimization of editing processes using DaVinci Resolve and Adobe.
- From Pitch to Moodboard with Cristina Borsatti: Professional tools for project presentation.
- Film Fundraising with Andrea De Bartolis: Financing strategies and cultural marketing.
- Screenwriting Masterclass with Franco Ferrini: Narrative deepening with the author of “Once Upon a Time in America.”
Today, his cinema embodies this synthesis: an auteur language where human sensitivity meets technical rigor, creating films that emotionally resonate through authentic storytelling and meticulous attention to every frame.

Alternative Tools for Writing
Beyond traditional academic methods, Antonio integrates unconventional narrative tools rooted in his university and postgraduate studies of Carl Jung’s analytical psychology. Continuous exploration of Jungian thought intertwines with the Enneagram of Claudio Naranjo and astrology as interpretative keys for developing multidimensional characters.
These alternative approaches, grounded in Jungian archetypes and universal behavioral patterns, enrich his writing with deep psychological nuances. Understanding the collective unconscious and processes of individuation allows Antonio to explore human complexity analytically, transcending superficial storytelling.
As the author of all his documentaries and short films, Antonio applies these tools directly in the writing phase, creating characters embodying authentic archetypal dynamics and plots resonating with profound emotional truths. This integrated methodology, blending depth psychology and contemporary narrative techniques, maintains auteur consistency from conception to realization, overseeing every narrative aspect of his independent works.
